Little Break

She isn't performing for anyone. That's what drew me to this moment, the unselfconscious smile, the easy way she holds the cat, the warmth of her expression against a background that is almost architectural in its geometry. The contrast between the structured, dark green forms and the softness of the figures in the foreground was something I kept returning to while painting this. Tenderness doesn't need a soft setting to feel tender.
